One of the main reasons for the successful track record of Wireless LAN deployments has been that it's evolution has been maintained at a steady pace, in the right direction, while always allowing for a smooth transition from older versions.

802.11n, the version prior to the current, offered substantial performance improvement over its predecessor while delivering on its USP, which was handling the rapid growth of mobile devices at companies.

So, what are today's requirements of a wireless network?

Streaming video that is a continuous flow of bytes is typically ten to hundred times more bandwidth intensive compared to other applications. Migration to the cloud has also added to the stress on WLANs as files are being regularly downloaded on the fly by business users from the cloud as opposed to being available directly on the local network.

The current generation of Wi-Fi is called 802.11ac aka Wave 1 delivering network speeds of up to 1.3 Gbps. The proliferation of smartphones and tablets running large numbers of apps simultaneously in organizations is further accelerating these set of requirements. Also, uploading speeds have undergone a significant increase due to users today constantly uploading content in various forms.

There is a 3x speed improvement to 1.3 Gbps over the previous limit which was 450 Mbps. More devices and users can be supported per Wave 1 radio and there are some really neat advanced fine-tuning knobs available in the technology by default that give an added boost to its performance appeal.

So, is your business ready to take advantage of the latest wireless technology has to offer? Are you empowering your workforce with a powerful network they can leverage for peak productivity?
