As per an article in Forbes, 14 of the 20 world’s largest cities are already experiencing water scarcity. 2/3rds of the global population is projected to live in water-stressed areas by 2025. We are still dealing with covid and the water crisis has been round the corner for quite some time. Hopefully, we would have dealt with covid by then. In any case, we must start preparing for this situation now, so that we can avert this crisis and have the tap water consumption under our control.

The control will have to be implemented at 2 levels - inside the home, and outside it.

Inside the home, builders will have to provide or specify water-recycling appliances and systems, water-purifying and enriching products and consumables, and intelligent systems for reuse, enrichment and discharge. Outside of the home, builders and developers will need to think about regulation as well, starting to work with cities for residential wastewater reuse, plumbing codes, and decentralized electricity grids.

We need to define the regulatory framework now to enable the aspects involved with its objectives, and demonstrate this with a pilot that starts in Mumbai at the earliest possible. The plan is to use this pilot to measure real progress and impact on the total water ecosystem, replenishment, and basins impact. Then, we can enlarge the scope to the rest of the country and possibly, other parts of the world.
